Hi Guys,

PG165 would like to wish all our Chinese friends and fans:

A Blessed and Prosperous Chinese New Year...

We just had a fantastic time jamming in this new studio in SS2 called Master Music (or something like that) courtesy of Deric's ingenuity. We had so much fun that we definitely can't wait to hit the stage soon.

We're all still fitting in to our new roles and responsibilities as young working adults, long gone are our care-free student days. We're definitely alive and kicking and working on new material.

In fact our new material is so energy sapping that Justin can only sing it twice and vijay constantly toppled over the studio drum throne in mind numbing exhaustion. (I saw him clasping his face in his hands, savouring the brief recess in between songs)

I personally can't wait to showcase our latest material once we work out the finer arrangements.

On other band affairs, we met up with our potential publisher and things are looking very positive with the potential of new possibilities to be explored. We hope to get our paperwork finalized and concentrate on our music.

As for the band collaboration thingy and our role in the launching of Earth Day this March, stay tuned for further updates.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the lack of activity here. Everyone's been pretty busy.

Raj our manager just got a new job and has relocated from Melaka to KL in November and is currently in the states enjoying a White Christmas (oh the envy). So he has been pretty busy running around settling and adjusting to his new job scope.

Zhen Xin is away on holiday after graduating last October so he's been back in his hometown, Alor Setar for a while but will soon be shifting to KL to work in January (congrats bro).

Deric has been pretty busy with year end activities but he's also spearheading a collaboration between 4-5 bands in the klang valley (including us) that will probably include a tour as well as a compilation CD next year.

Vijay and myself are working in the same company(almost) so we're pretty much always discussing about the future works. Our bro will officially be starting his drum classes again in January with City Music. (am i allowed to say that? haha)

Since the gig last Sept, Justin's been playing with injured fingers for the past 6 months with a joint-related issue. So please keep him in prayer as he's been undergoing treatment with a speacialist for the last 2-3 months. It's quite painful so please pray for our bro...

We'll be back in the gig scene next year after everyone's pretty much settled down with making the transition between being part of the 'student-college-band' scene to something much more serious as young adults. (well the fun factor is still there).

Anyway, we're not dead but rather working hard behind the scenes especially with new arrangements and new material. We're still ironing out a contract with a publishing house.

Oh, and did i tell you guys i bought some new gear =D. (it's in my personal blog).

While I'm not playing any instruments, working my life away, or transforming my Optimus Prime, I usually take some time off to do some reading. And of course, a lot of my reading time is spent on the LRT too.

Did you know, as of July 2008:
- In 1984, Malaysians only read half a page a year.
- In 1996, Malaysians only read 2 books a year.
- In 2005, Malaysians still only read 2 books a year.
- Only 13 per cent of 27 million Malaysians read books.

Amazing statistics. :|

So, an event called RWP (Read while Waiting Project) was held on the 23rd of August. Basically, everyone will gather at a same place, then start reading at the stroke of 3pm. Any reading material will do - From novels to comics to newspapers.

Turnout wasn't too bad, although I expected more.

Yo Yo, it's been more than a week since the launch of our EP and we're so thankful too all our friends and fans who have been supporting us all this while. Do stay in tune for gigs which will be coming your way pretty soon.

We started and ended the prom with this song. The above video was the opening. For our closing, we had the entire dance floor going berserk and jumping, (probably all the adrenarline after the slow dances). Too bad didn't have enough memory for any more videos. I think that's the best ever atmosphere in all our gigs. With complete strangers singing along with us and having such a smashing time...huhu...they stormed the stage and nearly broke Justin's guitar gear...crazy...

Ok, two updates in a day. That's as good as you'll ever get =).
This recording was our first public rendition of our first bahasa Malaysia ballad. It's definitely not perfect yet, but like all our other songs, it will slowly envolve. It's all about love =). (played at LIA @ Cyberjaya)
Please pardon the quality of the audio...there's some clipping but it's all good. Kudos to Mel for taking it.

Well, it has been a really eventful 2 months for us, hence the tardiness in updating the PG blog. It was gig after gig. It was tiring but we're all happy!!!

Usually it takes a while for us to get warmed up, especially after dedicating so much time in the studio that we had not been gigging for a while.... and the first gig after a long break is usually the hardest.

Yup, it's on the cd as well. Just like all our other songs, it has evolved through time and carved out to be a real radio friendly track. GACC 2008 @ MMU Melaka

Last weekend, PG165 had the opportunity to play in MMU's GACC 2008

It's an event bringing together japanese anime, comic and games enthusiast from around the southern region. Some of the participants even dressed up in their favourite anime characters.

It was a pretty big event and it even has a two page article in the Sunday Star (9th March) .

Our band was briefly mentioned.

As for us, we were just there to rock and roll. We did two japanese rock covers entitled, "God Knows" and "Lost My Music". Since we didn't speak any Japanese let alone sing it, we had a lovely guest vocalist from Subang to belt it out. Featuring Cherry on Vox. With minimal rehearsing time, I think we did ok. Haha...we were lucky to find these videos of us on youtube taken by someone.

LOST MY MUSIC

We had lots of fun, the crowd was just awesome. After catching their attention on the Japanese numbers, we proceeded with our own setlist. First which sent the crowd into estacy was Smooth (Santana & Rob Thomas), followed by songs from our coming EP, "I Will" and "Let it All Out".
The response was extremely positive in a sense that we managed to introduce ourselves to a whole new and different crowd which was amazingly receptive. If only we had our EP NOW...it would have been extra awesome to share our music with our new friends...

Unfortunately we don't have all the videos and pictures yet...still waiting from the organizer to pass us the official material...hehe...Stay in tune for more updates. We will fill you in with more pics and vids as soon as we get the best ones...

It's been a while due to our schedule being tied up working on the up coming album but we're all itching to get out there and jump around with our guitars...We'll be rocking and playing our stuff at City Community Church in Melaka. Details of this gig are:

A brief snippet about what this is all about:

City Community Church will be organizing its first Power Night on the 23rd February. The main objective is to bring young people together in Melaka, both youth and young adults for an awesome night of music and Praise & Worship. This will be a quarterly event and will also serve as a platform for home grown bands and local talent to serve and minister. PG 165 will be kicking off the Power Night for this quarter. Indeed music is an extraordinary universal tool for communication and
evangelism. Lets get excited and don't miss out on this extraordinary night.

The place is in Bukit Baru, near the Melaka Main Post Office and opposite the Straits Meridian Hotel (sorry the map in the poster is a bit too small to view here). HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!! (although it's already nearly a month into January).

December has been a 'chill' period for the recording since the studio could not arrange a schedule for us. But things have picked up considerably in January and by the end of this week, we would have recorded vocals for 3 out of our 5 tracks. Our determination to be patient while working hard behind the scenes has been bearing results and we're really excited as the album nears it's completion.

Our sound engineer, Sel who has experience working with bands like Beat the System, Dragon Red, Estranged, Throne Away, Deja Vodoo Spells, Broken Scar, Bau, Hannah Tan, and Milla just to name a few has often impressed us time and again with his array of brilliant ideas during the recording sessions. Everything is looking and sounding good.

We have some plans for a gig in Melaka some time soon, so we'll keep you guys updated. These are some pictures we took at the MRSC last December.

Guess what??? Our exclusive www.pg165.com website is up and under construction, and will be unvield in conjunction with the release of our up and coming EP. Do check it out here. It'll be a place meant for PG fans and friends to get up close and personal with the band as well as to serve as a meeting point for those who share in our vision and in our music.

So where can you catch us next??? We'll be in KL this weekend to check out the Switchfoot concert at KLCC on the 2nd February. Come on down and hang out with us.

MRSC 2007

We'll be going to this. We're invited again as guest to watch this songwriting competition.

Seems like a glitzy event. Anyway the EP is in progress...it has been a tiring yet fulfilling experience. So far everything sounds great...it would be an understatement say that we're excited. In fact after listening to the rough mix, we're totally blown away at what we think would be the final product. From the chugging guitars to the melodic keybord lines, it's a fusion of sorts.

The scheduled release of the EP would either be in the region of late December 2007 or January 2008. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact date for now since the finality of it depends on a variety of factors and unforseen cirumstances.

Besides that, keep your fingers crossed for brand new spanking website coming soon in conjunction with the EP launch.

The Journey has begun...

PG 165 EP

RECORDING SESSIONS

Last weekend, PG 165 made a historic journey down to KL. It was a very profound moment for the band. Four of us from Melaka (meeting Deric in KL) which was Jason, Justin, Vijay and Zx were all overcome with emotion. Such a feeling was indescribable. It was the feeling of pure satisfaction and accomplishment. We had all waited patiently for this day to come...in fact we were literally counting the days and licking our lips in glee (well, zhen-xin was). Surely God must be smilling down on us today.

Yup, this was a milestone in out band's history...

History was made the day none of us had to drive...because Raj our manager so wonderfully decided to drive us in his brand new, spanking, shinning one month old Toyota VIOS. Thanks Raj, we really appreciated it. =)

Oh yeah, the other thing was we finally recorded the drum tracks...WOHOOO...

OK, seriously it was a big day for the band, escpecially for Vijay. So we soon found ourselves in the nice cosy atmosphere of Sonique Productions owned by Nick Lee, Malaysia's award winning producer for bands and artist like Pete Teo, Pop Shuvit, Altered Frequency, Dragon Red and many more.

DAY 1: Recording Guitar Guide Track

The guide tracks were recorded at SUPAFOOK studios on the 2nd of September 2007. Jason laid all the tracks down using his PRS Tremonti SE.

DAY 2: Recording Drum Tracks

Vijay had the opportunity to use Nick Lee's killer drum kit for the recording. The first part of the process is the setting up. (Justin is helping Vijay to customize the drums)

The first thing we noticed was the small blue ear plugs Keith, the sound engineer took out from his pocket and then stuffed into his ears while he grinned at us. Then we realised we forgot something essential as Vijay tested the drums and familiarized himself with the kit. It was LOUD.

Did I say LOUD? Nick Lee and the sound engineers told Vijay to play it loud to make it sound alive. To play as loud as possible. To them, loud is good. Drums that sounds dead can't be resurrected by any means of technology. Vijay described the feeling with a methaphor. I quote him

"Anyway recording in Nick Lee's studio was an awesome experience. The drum sounded so warm, loud and bright. Let me tell ya, telling a drummer to hit as hard as you can with a killer kit is like giving a full tank, fresh tires, new Ferrari to Zhen Xin and telling him that there is no speed limit please take it for a drive.... Wohoo!! . OK maybe the story tak kena but owh well i had so much fun. =)"

Did I say LOUD? LOUD is an understatement.

The studio was quite a chill out place for the rest of the band as you can see, they're relaxing in a seperate room as Vijay was sweating himself out there...

We were shielded from the sheer volume of the drums in the console room where the engineers track the drums. As you can hear from the videos below...it's still pretty audible and you can hear every stroke.

Before anything is recorded, the engineers (Sel and Keith) will determine the level of the raw signal being captured to see if it is good enough. The rest of us were chilling and in a super good mood...

The sound engineers told me that it was ok for me to snap pictures from close up just as long as I didn't make any noise during the recording. So there I was in the same room as Vijay. And I can tell you that I nearly fell down when he started hitting it because it was blasting...and the rest of the band was laughing at me through the glass partiton from the safety of the console room.

It has a little bit of influence from Swithfoot's weird but creative sense of music.

The recording process was a good opportunity for us to gain exposure and learn many new things. It was challenging but Nick Lee's drum recording sounded awesome. We now know why Alda our producer wanted the drums done here. After about 3 and a half to 4 hours of recording which of course included tea breaks (Otai Burger) and toilet breaks and the occasional discussion of ideas, we were done. Kudos to Vijay for doing an amazing job and to Keith and Sel for their input during the tedious process.

The pace is finally picking up. The EP is slowly taking shape albeit still a long journey to completion. I personally can't wait for the proper guitar tracks to be laid down.
